Two Dimensional Works ILLUSTRATION (for more two-dimensional work see PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY, GRAPHIC DESIGN) |
Illustration always seeks attention with an underlying meaning. Art, here, is an effort to communicate an idea, a moral, a theory. It is said, an image is worth a thousand words, and so often this exchange rate is fair. However, contrary to most visual/verbal anecdotes, verbal art (writing) often leaves less room to the reader's interpretation, whereas visual art may leave more. We may come up with our own mental "picture" from a written description, but when contemplating visual art, "What does it mean?" is all too familiar a refrain. The meaning (if there is one) can usually be exposed in the artist's verbal presentation, and the viewers' reaction is defined. But, when left alone to arrive at one's own interpretation of a piece of art, each individual may well come to a different conclusion. The title of each illustration (above and right) is presented along with the larger version (click on each). The skier (bottom image) is included to show that I can make a non-political statement with my illustration, as I can with my paintings. |
