Ink, pastel, water color, marker,
colored pencil; all these you can see grow on an empty piece of paper or
canvas. In contrast, techniques of key-lining, overlay, and digital
leave the final product a surprise until the last key stroke or final turning
of the printing press. Only then does the illustration emerge.
Images
are much more than the materials used to create them. In their most
basic form, all artists' creations are a fabrication of the mind and soul.
But technique, that element somewhat akin to wisdom, comes only when the
artist's soul is firmly attached to pen, brush, or pencil. Like great
improvisational jazz, each stroke is another "note" just waiting to be realized. |
