Three Dimensional Works FOUNTAINS (for more three-dimensional work see SCULPTURE, FURNITURE, HOME & GARDEN) |
| Fountains:
always attractive, like flames
rising off a burning log. Soothing. They moderate the local
sound environment, making even the busiest courtyard or office space more
private. Many outdoor fountains cease to exist in the winter. Turned off, they become just another empty concrete swimming pool. When I design a fountain, I want an attractive sculpture to be present year 'round. To that extent, I carried that to an extreme in the sculpture commissioned by the State of Colorado for the Dept. of Public Health and Environment. The sculpture itself became the water. Using bent and twisted aluminum, highly polished and enameled with water tones, the "fountain" rises more than ten feet above a 48" basin filled with transparent blue-dyed resin. The entire effect is mimicry of a real fountain. The effect was good enough to fool the birds. When the sculpture was in the middle of transportation to its final display site, several robins came and sat briefly on the lip, expecting a bath. Thus the sculpture's name: "The Birds Came to Visit." This sculpture is on permanent display in Denver, Dept. of Public Health and Environment, 8100 Lowry Blvd, Denver, CO.
