Furniture can never be purely functional.   Aesthetics must always be part of the design, as, of course, should longevity.  A fine piece of furniture must work, last, and look grand.  A chair must fit, but should also be inviting, welcoming.  A dresser's drawers must open and close for generations while the case should maintain strong stature: closed, silent, and honest.  A dining table should accompany, but not overshadow, fine cuisine and good conversation.
Exotic woods often catch the eye, but pine or spruce can be just as awesome as rosewood and teak.  If poorly made or finished, the finest, toughest woods will wear, tear, and buckle.  Modern glues and finishes are no cover for poor design or workmanship.
Complexity is no substitute for good design.  Simple will likely look good a year or a generation from now.  But "simple" can be deceiving.  Some of the simplest pieces can take the longest to make since each joint and each part advertises errors hugely.
Let at least one really fine piece of furniture be part of your life.  Than pass it on and the next generation can add one more.
