This fountain provides
a comforting sound in the reception area of a busy dental practice in Boulder,
Colorado. The cut slate is from quarries in India, chosen for it's
natural color variations and rough surface.
Indoor fountains present an interesting design problem.
The soothing sounds a fountain provides (the "white noise" effect that
creates a sense of auditory privacy) means splashing water. As you
can imagine, splashing out of the container is unacceptable. When I
installed this fountain, I "tuned" the amount of splashing by lightly
sanding the sharp lower edges of the slate. Water clings to those rounded
edges better and splashing was contained entirely within the copper basin.
Years later, this fountain continues to provide it's comforting sounds.
