The most wonderful thing happened
on this fountain. The spiral is made from all the natural colors of sandstone
that are quarried from the Lyons formation along the Front Range in Colorado.
In early October, with all the surrounding aspen in bright fall plumage,
a White-breasted nuthatch visited. Nuthatches, for those not familiar
with this small bird, glean bugs from the bark of trees by walking head down,
working their way from crack to crack, starting high and working low. Do
they do this because they can find more bugs? I don't know. But on
this day the tiny bird flew in and magically gripped the vertical stone
of the fountain where the water spouts out and, just like a person at a water
fountain, sipped from the stream of water. I know several rock
climbers who envy that talent.
